Permanent vs. Semi-Permanent
Cosmetic tattoos are different from traditional body ink. We use different equipment, application methods and unique products designed specifically for sensitive skin. The skin on our face, particularly around the eyes and lips is thinner and more delicate. For Facial Tattoos we implant the pigments in a gentle process at a more shallow depth when compared to body tattoos. As such, while cosmetic tattoos are still a “permanent” process, they are meant to appear natural and will fade over time as the skin cells cycle and shed. Cosmetic tattoos are therefore are more suitably characterized as semi-permanent.
Each person’s genetic makeup, age, health, and skin type will have different affects on healing, colour retention and fading. Depending on the tattoo style, location and colour, a cosmetic tattoo will typically require a touch-up and colour renewal in 1 to 3 years. Other factors such as a client’s daily skin care routines and lifestyle will also affect the permanency of the tattoo.
Maintenance is key! Protecting your cosmetic tattoo from harmful ultraviolet sun rays and avoiding exfoliants such as anti-aging and acne products will significantly increase the longevity of your tattoo. However, regular maintenance visits with your tattoo technician will ensure that your tattoo stays vibrant and crisp.
